5 steps to optimise your Instagram bio

5 ways you can optimise your Instagram bio šŸ‘‡

Ā

Your Instagram page is essentially your digital business card. First impressions count!

Here are 5 ways you can optimise your Instagram bio:

(Note: these tips apply to both businesses and personal accounts)

1. ADD EMOJIS

As you may have seen in one of the posts on my feed adding emojis is the quickest and easiest way to draw attention and let your followers know that you are a fun person (or brand) to follow šŸ‘šŸ’ƒ (see what I did there?!)

Research from Hubspot in 2018 showed that emojis in a tweet increase engagement by 25% and emojis in a Facebook post increase the number of likes by 57%, and comments and shares by 33% šŸ‘€ So you're definitely going to want to add them to your Instagram bio!

You can use emojis as bullet points in your bio description. See example below for one of my clients:

2. ADD A LOCATION TAG

One of the most frustrating things about creating a bio that converts is the limit of 150 characters. Therefore instead of adding your location to your bio and using up valuable characters add a location tag instead. The location tag is also a clickable link and makes for a better user experience.

To do this simply go to your Instagram profile and click on 'Edit Profile'. Then click on 'Contact Options'. You will then have the option to add an address. This will then display as a link underneath your bio.

3. SEPARATE SENTENCES

Three words.. Break. It. Down.

The human eye doesn't like to read two or three long sentences in a bio with full stops. Let's face it - we all have the attention span of a goldfish these days! Separate your sentences and restructure into bullet point format. I would also advise using capital letters to make certain words stand out. You can use emojis as bullet points as I showed you in point number 1.

You can also use different fonts in your bio to attract attention by going to IG Fonts on either mobile or desktop. I usually try to stay away from these because some of the older versions of the app won't display the font correctly but it is a nice touch šŸ–‹ A few of my clients have done this and it works well!

4. SELECT YOUR CATEGORY

If you have a business account you will be able to select a category tag for your business and this will display above your Insta bio šŸ· This category tag will tell profile visitors exactly what type of business you have with just a glance. This will allow you to fit more information about your business into the 150 characters in your bio.

5. CREATE A SEARCHABLE NAME

Have you ever noticed that your Instagram name is searchable? Let's take a look at my Insta name..

I have used Karissa | Social Media Manager. When a user searches for 'Social Media Manager' my page will show up in the search bar. There are thousands of social media managers on Instagram so I will probably show down the bottom of this search - the more specific your business is the better! I also include my name for personalisation.
